the story behind the fundraising
on 21st august 2009, my husband was involved in a collision with a car whilst on his motorbike. he lost 4 pints of blood at the scene, broke his neck and back in 6 places, fractured his skull, shattered his thigh bone, broke his shoulder, shoulder blade and collar bone and dislocated his shoulder and ankle.
He required immediate surgery to stop the bleeding and repair his leg, and every second counted.
the air ambulance is definitely one of the main reasons he is still here to tell the tale.
he then spent 5 weeks in hospital - 4 of them laid completely flat on his back unable to move any part of himself for fear of damaging his spinal cord, and then a further 6 weeks in a wheelchair as his leg was unable to support his full body weight, but his upper body breaks meant he was also unable to use crutches. he still had to wear a full body brace to protect his back. he then went onto crutches, and was finally allowed to take the body brace off in the week before christmas.
now, 6 months on he has made a virtual full recovery - something we didnt dare dream about in september last year! he can walk along the beach with his 3 small children (although he can't quite run after the youngest yet!) and he is back at work full time earning the pennies.
The yorkshire air ambulance are fully charity funded - they receive no funding from the government, so it is vitally important fundraising is continuously done to ensure the helicopters stay in the air to help people like stephen.
my family have done 2 charity auctions in west yorkshire and have a further one planned for june 2010 in withernsea, east yorkshire. to date, they have raised over £1300.
if you would like to attend the charity auction in june, or have anything we might be able to auction off, please email me :)
we are also collecting unwanted bras for the bra appeal. if the YAA collect 200,000 bras, they will be guarenteed an income of £10,000 - and the bras are then sent to women of west africa who desperately need them. if you have any bras you can send onto me, please email me :)
